L'Università di Portsmouth, sua città natale, ha conferito a Lol Coxhill lo scorso luglio il Dottorato Onorario in Musica: "Lol Coxhill, a well-known saxophonist who was born in Portsmouth, receives a Doctorate of Music. Lol was introduced to music by his father and he began learning the saxophone with tenor saxophone player Aubrey Franks in London. In the 1960s he toured England with R&B band ‘Tony Knight’s Chessmen’, supporting Rufus Thomas. He soon discovered the delights of free improvisation and developed his own approach to unaccompanied solo soprano saxophone."
