Da una sessione di studio del giugno 2012 proviene il nuovo titolo, il settimo, del catalogo Fataka: Exta, di John Butcher, Thomas Lehn e John Tilbury. "In ancient Roman religious ritual, exta were the organs of a sacrificed animal offered up to the gods - the lungs, heart, liver and gall bladder; here, Exta is a selection of four pieces (one in two parts) carefully extracted from a long studio session."

Atmosfera rovente al Cafe Oto londinese qualche sera fa, quando Paul Dunmall e Tony Bianco hanno raccontato ancora una volta del loro amore per John Coltrane. Un souvenir del concerto si ottiene tramite Inconstant Sol: "Paul Dunmall and Tony Bianco have recently released two cds of duets dedicated to their love and respect of the music of John Coltrane: Thank you to John Coltrane and Tribute to Coltrane (Slam).  Last week they took it to London's Cafe Oto in the midst of a heatwave. Tony Bianco was sweat-soaked from simply setting up his kit.  This man's strength and energy is superhuman.  Paul Dunmall, loving Trane's music so much, raised the temperature even higher with his inspired and impassioned saxophonics. Hot stuff indeed!"

Alcuni estratti dalle sessioni effettuate dai Matching Mole tra il gennaio e il luglio 1972 per la BBC e il John Peel Show stanno per essere pubblicati dall'etichetta russa B13, specializzata in stampe e ristampe in vinile colorato di documenti rari e poco ufficiali. Lo anticipa Burning Shed: "A B13 label LP presented on white vinyl in a clear PVC sleeve with blue lettering. Ospite di David Garland nella puntata di domenica scorsa di Spinning on Air era John Zorn.

The celebrations are already beginning for composer John Zorn's upcoming 60th birthday on September 2nd. During the next few months there will be concerts of Zorn's music in the museums and concert halls of New York City, as well as elsewhere in the world. Zorn has been an important performer and catalyst in New York's new music scene since the 1970s. His wide-ranging musical interests keep him actively crossing supposed boundaries of style, prolifically creating new projects, and adding still more to the hundreds of albums of his music already released.
John Zorn has been David Garland's most frequent guest on Spinning On Air over the years, and now he returns to the show again, to share some new music - including his unreleased Shir Ha-Shirim (Song of Songs) - that will be featured in two concerts that are part of the Lincoln Center Festival this month: a night of vocal music on July 18, and Zorn's string quartets on July 20.
Zorn also discusses the influence of visual art on his music, his love of research and history, composing music as a spiritual practice, the importance of love in his music, and how risk can lead to transcendence.

Prende il via stasera a Merano (BZ) un nuovo giro europeo di concerti del quintetto di Steve Swallow, con successive date italiane a Milano, Bari e Genova. Con il bassista ci sono Carla Bley, Chris Cheek, Steve Cardenas e Jorge Rossy. In scaletta i materiali dell'album Into the Woodwork. Circa l'apporto di Carla Bley alla realizzazione dell'album e del repertorio, dice Swallow: "Carla and I spent a long time playing this music with just the two of us. She brings a composer-arranger’s sensibility to things – she painstakingly revised her organ parts during this initial process. It thrilled me how intently she took to the music. But there’s a paradoxical element to her playing. She takes her preparation so seriously, yet when it comes to performance, she improvises wild and woolly, fully in the moment. In that, she has a partner in crime with Jorge. He’s another wild card on the bandstand. You never know what those two are going to do. Chris and Cardenas and I are spontaneous, but we operate within parameters that we like to leave more or less in place. I think these two different musical sensibilities give the band a balance.
There’s another way Carla contributed. I think of myself as essentially a miniaturist, a songwriter. But I enjoy the virtues of long-form writing by others, and Carla’s flair for that was an influence on the ebb and flow of the music. The album is made up of 12 discrete songs, but many of them are linked so that they flow together and cross-reference each other, almost as medleys. That sort of thing keeps you into a record more, where you can just put your head down and not raise it for 15 minutes at a stretch – I like that as a listener and wanted to imbue the album with an element of that".

Il titolo non è recente - la data infatti è il 1991 - ma la sua circolazione in Europa è stata sempre assai limitata. ReR ne ha qualche copia in distribuzione in questo periodo: è un dvd di 90 minuti che presenta un progetto degli anni ottanta del percussionista e compositore giapponese Kiohiko Semba, The Haniwa Allstars. Così lo presenta Chris Cutler, ammiratore di Semba fin dai tempi di Wha Ha Ha (di cui nel 1983 volle realizzare per Recommended un album 'portfolio'): "Just stunning. I have followed Kiohiko Semba since I first encountered Wha Ha Ha, in Tokyo, in the early '80s: master drummer, eccentric genius and all round prankster, he then produced one of the truly great records of the decade: Kanishabali. Now, this DVD documents another of his '80s projects: The Haniwa Allstars - in this version, a massive 54 piece costumed ensemble, featuring both western and traditional, electric and acoustic instruments, accompanied by a succession of singers who collectively rip through a programme of original and covered materials. There is an open-ness to every level of serious and frivolous music here, and a kind of joy in mixing it all up that I have only ever seen work convincingly in Japan (Zappa covered much of the ground, but always came to it through the dark glass of irony, Sun Ra was closer, but eschewed normality and made high cultural claims. Haniwa does neither of these things, resting its case instead on intelligent fun). The DVD is beautifully and professionally made, and a joy to watch and listen to: the musicianship is breathtaking, the arrangements fantastic, and there is minute attention to detail with no apparent effort as well as humour with no implicit criticism. Add discipline, a kind of enigmatic modesty, and a refreshing respect for the essence of things (their version of YMCA is an education) and you get pure 90 minutes of pure pleasure".

Prosegue per opera della newyorkese Captured Tracks la ripubblicazione in cd dei lavori di inizio carriera del brillante gruppo pop britannico The Cleaners from Venus, autoprodotti nei primi anni ottanta in puro stile DIY e circolati principalmente su audiocassette rubate o riciclate. Un primo volume lo scorso anno comprendeva Blow Away Your Troubles, On Any Normal Monday e Midnight Cleaners; oggi il secondo volume ripropone In The Golden Autumn, Songs For A Fallow Land, Under Wartime Conditions e un cd di inediti e rarità, A Dawn Chorus. Ideatori del gruppo, inizialmente un semplice duo, furono Lol Elliott e Martin Newell, quest'ultimo destinato negli anni novanta a una discreta fortuna letteraria e a gustose produzioni soliste, assistito in talune occasioni da Andy Partridge e Louis Philippe. Un profilo di Newell, con intervista recente, è in This is Pop.

Basically, he's a pop poet and rock musician. The genius behind the wonderful 'Cleaners From Venus' and the man responsible for creating some of the best British pop songs you've probably never heard. But it's a little more complicated than that. He'll tell you that he doesn't have a career though - just a series of jobs and engagements which take together have added up to some sort of a living this past few decades. He plays various guitars, bass, keyboards, mandolin and he can sing. He makes rather English-sounding pop records, he writes poems and articles in national newspapers. He does spoken word performances and less-frequently, live music gigs. He occasionally presents TV programmes. He has been on national radio quite a bit over the years. He has a number of books and records out. He doesn't have management, an agent or anyone 'looking after' him. Mostly, he works. Mostly, it's writing, and most of you, should probably know about him.

Un film e un doppio album dal vivo rendono omaggio alla figura di Kate McGarrigle, cantante e autrice folk canadese scomparsa nel 2010, madre dei cantanti Rufus e Martha Wainwright e partner della sorella Anna in un celebre duo vocale attivo fin dagli anni '60: il film, Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You, è stato presentato di recente alla Brooklyn Academy of Music, mentre l'album, Sing Me the Songs-Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle, esce in questi giorni per la Nonesuch. E' tratto dai concerti tenuti a Londra nel 2010 - all'edizione del festival Meltdown guidata da Richard Thompson - nel 2011 a New York e l'anno scorso a Toronto, tutti curati da Joe Boyd, che dell'album è anche il produttore: "Kate occupied a central place in my personal Pantheon of the greatest musicians I have known", scrisse di lei Boyd. "Her songs are smart, romantic, cynical, tuneful and deeply rooted in the traditions she loved. She was demanding, determined, fierce, gentle, loving and never, ever dull. We could start a conversation about a recording or a concert and end up talking for an hour about the Ottoman Empire. I miss her terribly".

Si consolida l'alleanza musicale tra Mike Heron e il gruppo di Glasgow Trembling Bells con un nuovo intenso ciclo di concerti in Regno Unito sotto sigla The Circle is Unbroken: "Trembling Bells are an acclaimed Glasgow based indie folk rock band that reference late 1960s psychedelia and British folk revival acts such as Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band. Lavinia Blackwall’s soaring vocal style has drawn comparisons to Sandy Denny, and she took part in the recent tour ‘The Lady: A Homage to Sandy Denny’ which was televised by the BBC. Mike Heron is a Scottish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, best known for his work in The Incredible String Band. The group built a considerable following, especially within the British counterculture in the 60’s and 70’s and were pioneers of psychedelic folk, integrating a wide variety of traditional music forms, blending rock, folk and world music into an atmospheric whole. A new Incredible String Band album ‘Live at The Fillmore 1968’ was released on Hux this year. Trembling Bells have worked with Mike Heron on a number of occasions and there is a natural kinship between them. ‘The Circle Is Unbroken’ debuted to glowing reviews at Celtic Connections in January, and celebrates Mike Heron’s legacy in his 70th year. The concert highlights their musical sympathies, as they exchange material in an evening comprised of classic String Band songs, and the contemporary tunes of The Trembling Bells."

Peter Brötzmann, along with Evan Parker, is unquestionably the most important representative of European jazz since the mid 60's when this music went its own way, diverging from the American model as part of the Fluxus movement. Even if taking inspiration from the freedom of voices of Ornette Coleman and, especially, Albert Ayler, Brötzmann conquered his space as a true original, opening a big window for others to follow in the old continent, whether they play more abstract or concrete. More than an inspiration musically, Brötzmann became an example of an artist who used this music to find his own voice, which proved crucial for generations to come. That his contribution to this music was seminal on both sides of the Atlantic is proven by the creative collaborations he has fostered over the years with American improvisers the likes of Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, Jason Adasiewicz, Eric Revis, Nasheet Waits, Bill Laswell, William Parker, Joe McPhee and even Cecil Taylor and Steve Lacy, but also with innumerable others from all parts of the globe. Peter’s huge discography is a showcase of will, guts and love for experimentation in a wide span of combinations from solo to big band, with all sorts of players and approaches without ever losing his own voice and vision.

Tornano nello stesso luogo dove dieci anni fa tennero il loro ultimo concerto e danno il via ai festeggiamenti di trent'anni di attività: da domani, per cinque serate consecutive, Christian Vander e Offering sono a Le Triton, a Les Lilas (Francia). Auguri!

Il y a trente ans, motivé par la pulsion artistique de retourner à ses racines "coltraniennes", avec une formation plus acoustique et plus souple que Magma, Christian Vander créait le groupe Offering. Plus expérimental, laissant une belle part à l'improvisation, ce groupe permet aux musiciens d'explorer de nouvelles voies musicales. Trente années ont filé charriant des millions de notes et emportant Offering hors de vue et d'ouïe des jeunes générations. Afin qu'elles profitent, à leur tour, de cette magnifique "offrande", Christian Vander et ses musiciens ont décidé de fêter cet anniversaire au Triton, précisément là où ils avaient joué pour la toute dernière fois, il y a déjà dix ans.
