Speciale concerto di Iancu Dumitrescu con l'Hyperion Ensemble, costituito per l'occasione da Angharad Davies, Mayah Kadish, Gwen Reed, Otto Wilberg, Mark Sanders, Chris Cutler, Ed Lucas, Alex Paxton, Yoni Silver, Tim Hodgkinson e Lucy Railton. Si unisce anche il pianista Reinhold Friedl, fondatore di Zeitkratzer. A inizio anni Novanta il progetto dei Westbrook sulle musiche di Rossini si trasformò - e non fu quella l'ultima delle sue mutazioni - in partitura per grande orchestra, affidata all'ensemble della radio pubblica di Amburgo Norddeutscher Rundfunk sotto la direzione di Dieter Glawishnig e a numerosi ospiti intervenuti per il debutto in concerto. A quasi trent'anni di distanza c'è la possibilità di riascoltare estratti di quel concerto, domani sera a partire dalle 22.00 sui canali radio e web della NDR: Jazz und Europa: Mike and Kate Westbrook meet Gioacchino Rossini.

This historic collection focuses on the Westbrooks’ recordings generated over more than three decades in a remarkable, creative collaboration with Jon Hiseman at Temple Music Studios. These include albums with Duo, Trio, Quartet, Quintet and Orchestra, plus Kate’s solo albums and Mike and Kate’s compositions for opera and music theatre.

Le epiche gesta di Louis Moholo-Moholo con i suoi Six Blokes - Alexander Hawkins, Steve Williamson, Byron Wallen, Jason Yarde e John Edwards - presso la londinese Church of Sound lo scorso 1 settembre sono ora splendidamente documentate su YT.

Moholo-Moholo’s electrifying live performances still exhibit the same uncompromising ferocity and creativity which have marked him out as one of the seminal figures of the national and international scenes for half a century. Timothy Forster pubblica per Echoes and Dust una bella intervista a Chris Cutler. Tra i molti passaggi, tutti di grande interesse, uno in limpida sintesi indica la continuità tra gli album degli Henry Cow e l'influenza degli eventi storici dell'epoca: "Our musical language evolved in a pretty linear way. The snapshots taken on that road – the studio albums – were different from one another because we constantly found new problems to solve or new questions to ask (and sometimes, new technologies to explore). But our circumstances changed, global politics changed and the problems we faced – both artistic and professional – changed; we were just trying to keep up. So, where Legend was cheery and Dadaistic, Unrest was pessimistic, dark and deliberately experimental. In Praise of Learning was optimistic – and in-your-face political, while Western Culture swayed between precision and organicism, and was steeped in narrative. I think it would be easy to make the case that they track the political events of their time – as well as the evolution of our own aesthetic thinking. Desperate Straights and Hopes and Fears, in their different ways, explored our roots in pop, and short song form, which was, in a way, our natural language. But, of course, everything we did precipitated out of the interplay of our world and the world, and I don’t think it’s hard to follow the threads that bind them. It’s the story of a time, and a collective mind at work."

The Soft Machine were one of England's original and best psychedelic bands, emerging out of the same "UFO Club" London scene at the same time as Pink Floyd. While the band would always undergo constant personnel and stylistic change, their best known lineup in their psychedelic days was the trio of Kevin Ayers-bass, guitar, vocals, Mike Ratledge-organ and Robert Wyatt-drums, vocals. They played many shows and built an audience in “swinging London” and beyond. A link with Jimi Hendrix’s management culminated in the Softs touring the USA with the Jimi Hendrix Experience two different times in 1968, playing over 60 shows as their opening act and recording their first album while in the USA during their touring, after which the band collapsed and disbanded...temporarily. Middle Earth Masters captures the 1967-era Soft Machine trio in full concert glory, recorded live at London's legendary Middle Earth club. The performance is unbelievably freaky for 1967, with songs that feature unusual structures linked by wild solos and improvisations. Those of you who know and love the first Soft Machine album will be amazed at how much more insane and insanely loud the band actually were and also surprised to hear that Mike Ratledge was doing the crazy solo fuzz organ parts (ala the opening of Facelift) in 1967. Includes rare, previously unissued photographs and a short essay by Michael King about these tapes and his work to make them sound as good as possible.

Quattro giorni di residenza artistica per festeggiare dieci intensi anni di intesa e complicità: Peter Brötzmann torna domani al Cafe Oto londinese con alcuni degli amici più cari, e offre da bere a tutti!

Thrilled to host a very special four-day festival celebrating the great Peter Brötzmann and his decade long relationship with Cafe Oto. Having played one of the first residencies in the venue, Peter has helped shape and define our programme over the past ten years; presenting a seminal body of work here from residencies with his Chicago Tentet to performances with artists spanning Keiji Haino to Heather Leigh to William Parker and Hamid Drake, as well as new relationships with UK-based musicians.
In keeping with Peter's restless creativity, this festival covers a broad sonic range. First-time collaborations with Matana Roberts and Camille Emaille sit alongside alongside long-term collaborations going back over half a century. Some of these all-time classic groupings have never happened at Oto before, such as Peter's longstanding duo with Han Bennink that spawned the seminal Ein Halber Hund Kann Nicht Pinkeln and Schwarzwaldfahrt LPs (now both over 40 years old) and his classic trio with Han and Alexander von Schlippenbach. We're also pleased to be able to revisit fertile collaborations that first occurred at Oto, Pat Thomas having been invited to perform with Peter at his first ever shows here.
The through-line that Peter has created here runs from Oto's earliest beginnings and has been incredibly important in shaping where we are today; in this festival we celebrate Peter and his work.

E in tema di anniversari - in questo caso, il quarantesimo - giunge assai gradita la riedizione di lusso in cd e vinile dell'Orchestral Favorites che Frank Zappa vide pubblicato in malo modo nel 1979 nel pieno delle sue beghe contrattuali con la Warner Bros. Offre un accurato restauro sonoro dei nastri prodotti con l'Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra per l'album originale, l'intero concerto del 18 settembre 1975 all'UCLA’s Royce Hall di Los Angeles e altre sorprese, un libretto con la storia, le immagini, le annotazioni e i ricordi di alcuni protagonisti di allora...

In September 1975, in between trying out new band members and preparing for tour, Zappa scheduled an event at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Using his own budget with funds from the surprise hit single Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow, he hired a roughly 37-piece orchestra with the intention to hear his orchestral music played. As Travers details in the liner notes, “Frank supervised everything, hired sound and lights, mixed the front of house sound at times, conducted the orchestra on occasion, and played guitar with them. The program repertoire consisted of complex and challenging music that originates from all time frames of FZ’s career. Older themes that predate the original Mothers Of Invention, to brand new pieces hot off the pen, mixed in with some good ol’ FZ directed improvisation.”
The Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Michael Zearott and made up of various live and studio musicians, most of which who had previously worked with Zappa on one of his many projects. They were assembled with the help of Mike Altschul and Earle Dumler who played on The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka albums. Other familiar names included: Bruce Fowler, Dave Parlato, Ian Underwood, Malcom McNab and Terry Bozzio. Zappa and the orchestra rehearsed for several days, had an afternoon recording session and performed two shows in two nights.
Zappa re-worked Orchestral Favorites for CD in 1991 and it has subsequently been reissued several times after his death but with the new master finally matched to the project tone reel, this is the first time the album has ever been presented how the late, great artist intended. Sounding better than it ever has, fans can enjoy this special and historical event in Zappa history in a new way, with the Royce Hall performances sounding as fresh as they did 44 years ago.

Sarà disponibile il 27 settembre, giorno esatto del cinquantesimo anniversario del celebre album dei Beatles, una nuova versione dell'omaggio che Mike Westbrook ideò per Abbey Road oltre trent'anni fa, ben documentato in cd (Off Abbey Road, Tip Toe/Enja 1990) e in concerto dal vivo in numerose occasioni, anche recenti. La registrazione viene da un concerto del 1996 a Norimberga e sarà diffusa in digitale da Proper Music con il titolo After Abbey Road attraverso iTunes e Spotify, dove chi non sa attendere può già trovare Oh! Darling.

The Westbrook Band’s version of the Beatles’ Oh! Darling will be online in advance of the official release date of After Abbey Road on September 27th. This will be 50 years since the original release of the iconic Beatles album. An exclusively digital-only release, After Abbey Road was recorded in concert in Nuremberg in 1996. John Winfield and Kate Westbrook are on vocals, with Brian Godding on guitar, Pete Whyman and Alan Wakeman on saxes, Andy Grappy on tuba, Mike Westbrook on piano and Peter Fairclough on drums.
